Ornithological Safari


Day 1 Nairobi - Amboseli

You will be met on arrival at Nairobi airport and driven straight away to Amboseli National Park. In the afternoon there will be a game drive, when you can search of bird species of this area. Dinner and overnight at Amboseli Serena Lodge

Day 2 Amboseli

Spend a full day in Amboseli National Park with morning and afternoon drives. Kilimanjaro's snow capped peaks dominate every aspect of this Park and form a stunning backdrop to the wildlife found here - elephant, lion, leopard, rhino, buffalo, cheetah and a host of plains game. Part of the Park is composed of a dried-up lake bed which, in the shimmering heat, produces fascinating mirages. The lake bed is subject to sporadic floods but permanent watering places for the game are provided by swamps and springs, fed by underground rivers from the mountain. The swamp provides an excellent habitat for a numerous variety of birds. Accommodation is at your lodge on full board basis

Day 3 Amboseli - Mount Kenya

Depart Amboseli early and drive through Nairobi and on northwards to the Mount Kenya area arriving in the afternoon. Dinner and overnight is at Mountain lodge, on the slopes of Mt. Kenya, where animals can be seen coming into the waterhole. Here there is optional activity of a guided walk in the surrounding forest.

Day 4 Mount Kenya

Departing Mountain Lodge are able to some more bird watching within the area, before driving on to Naro Moru River Lodge. Here you have the afternoon at leisure, in the lodges beautiful tropical gardens through which flows the Naro Moru River. There is also a Swimming pool, sauna, squash and tennis courts attached to the lodge, which is a base for climbing the mountain. Dinner and overnight.

Day 5 Mount Kenya - Samburu

In the morning you drive to meteorological station, for bird watching of the highland species on Mount Kenya. Later you return to Naro Moru and continue to Samburu National Reserve. The afternoon will be spent on a bird and game viewing drive followed by dinner and overnight at the Samburu Sopa Lodge.

Day 6 Samburu

You have a full day in Samburu National Reserve with morning and afternoon drives around the park. The landscape is rugged and dramatic, set in the arid northern area of Kenya. The Ewaso Nyiro river, proving a lifeline, runs along the southern boundary dividing Samburu from Buffalo Springs Reserve. Crocodile and hippo share the river with the many small herds of elephant, buffalo, lion, leopard, cheetah and plains game. There are various species that are unique to these northern areas - Beisa oryx, the long necked gerenuk, Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe and the blue shanked Somali ostrich. Accommodation is on full board basis.

Day 7 Samburu - Lake Nakuru

Today you drive across the Laikipia plateau, and drop down into the Great Rift Valley to Lake Nakuru National Park. A shallow and alkaline lake on the floor of the Great Rift Valley, has earned it's fame as the home of one of the greatest bird spectacles in the world - the concentration of often more than a million pink flamingo which seasonally feed on the abundant algae which thrives in the shallow warm waters. Other wading birds abound and many species of game can be found in the surrounding acacia savannah and forests. Lake Nakuru was designated as Kenya's first rhino sanctuary. You can enjoy an evening drive on the lake shores. Dinner and overnight at Lion Hill Lodge.

Day 8 Lake Nakuru - Lake Baringo

After breakfast you drive passed the extinct volcano Menengi to Lake Baringo, for another bird viewing experience of the species unique to this area. The Lake Baringo area is famous for having a large number of different bird species. Accommodation is at Island Camp. Optional activities include a boat ride on the lake.

Day 9 Lake Baringo – Lake Bogoria

From here you have a relatively short drive to Lake Bogoria Resort, with an afternoon drive around the Lake Bogoria reserve to see the hot springs, the masses of flamingo, and their nesting sites, as well as other bird and wildlife. The lodge has 2 swimming pools, one of which has fresh hot water from the natural springs. Dinner and overnight is at your lodge.

Day 10 Lake Bogoria – Kakamega

Depart in the morning after breakfast and drive through the Rift Valley and on to Eldoret town, then continue with safari to Kakamega, and on to Kakamega Forest known for the forest species of birds. Dinner and overnight will be at the Rondo Retreat lodge

Day 11 Kakamega

You have a full day in Kakamega Forest with time to view birds unique to the area, and admire the massive trees, the plants and insects. Among the vast array of birds the Kakamega Rain Forest is home to the flamboyant Great Blue Turaco, gemlike Emerald Cuckoo and the cacophonous Black-and-white casqued Hornbill. From the monkey family we have the blue Sykes, the red tailed, the common Black and White Colobus, and the rare deBrazza’s. Accommodation is on full board basis at the lodge

Day 12 Kakamega - Lake Victoria

From Kakamega you drive through the densley populated region of the Lake basin towards Lake Victoria. Here you will be able to see the water birds and many others that live around the lake. Overnight at the Kiboko Bay Resort, Kisumu.

Day 13 Lake Victoria

Full day in Kisumu area to view the vibrant birds species of the Lake Victoria area. Optional excursions include a visit to the Kisumu Impala sanctuary. Accommodation is on full board basis at your lodge.

Day 14 Lake Victoria - Masai Mara

Leaving the lake basin you drive to the Masai Mara, with its wide open grassy plains, forests, rivers and abundant wildlife. Accommodation with be in Masai Simba Lodge, set on a bend of the Talek river. An evening game drive will complete your day.

Day 15 Masai Mara

A full day in the Masai Mara, with drives in the morning and evening to witness the amazing variety of both bird and animal life that makes this spectacular region its home. Accommodation is at Mara Simba Lodge.

Day 16 Masai Mara

Time in the Mara with morning and afternoon drives to view bird species unique to southern part of Kenya. Also the wildebeest migration if time allows. Accommodation is at the Mara Simba Lodge

Day 17 Masai Mara

After an early morning drive you cross the Mara to Siana Springs Camp, in the Siana Group Ranch. Which occupies a lush indigenous forest watered by the largest natural springs in the Mara ecosystem. From here you will be able to enjoy a night game drive around the Siana conservancy area, to look out for nocturnal animals and birds.

Day 18 Masai Mara - Lake Naivasha

After an early drive you depart for Lake Naivasha, travelling across the Mau hills and down into the Great Rift Vally, passing between the extinct volcanoes of Suswa and Longonot. Afternoon to relax at Naivasha Sopa Lodge, on the shores of the lake. Optional excursions include a boat ride on the lake.

Day 19 Lake Naivasha - Nairobi

Drive back to Nairobi leisurely to arrive in the afternoon, where the safari will come to an end. You will be dropped off at the Airport.
